Project Needs/Requirements

Vivint had a backlog of training materials dispersed across different teams in the organization and in a myriad of forms. What was needed was a single manual that could contain these materials and also new materials to cover the fundamentals of the sales process and skills used at Vivint.

Meeting with stakeholders, we decided to create a sales manual, one that could serve both new and previously hired employees as a job aid—a document to help an employee at the time of their need. A working time of a few months was granted to the project, with the expected deadline that corresponded with the rollout of a new employee-development program.

Project Development

Working with SMEs and stakeholders, I nailed down the goals and scope of the project, being a how-to guide for the basic functions of the role of salesperson at Vivint combined with a reference guide. I began gathering the content available and assessing the gaps in coverage that would need to be filled with additional documents and projects.

After the existing content was layed out, I planned out the completion of the additional content. I met with business leaders and SMEs to get the content matter and followed standard instructional design pipelines for creating the new worksheets, reference guides, and write-ups. Any other missing subject matter was researched online.

The visual design of the manual had the goals of being simplistic but modern and sleek. Any illustrations were mostly line-work, keeping development time down and sticking to the modern and minimalistic style. With the design and content completed, layout of the manual could then be finished.

Project Results

The project was hugely successful based on feedback gathered from employees that used it. They praised the presentation and utility of the manual, some proclaiming to use it multiple times a day while on the job. The success of the manual came with another problem—we had to print more!
